What an exciting day!
We set off from Exeter and I had chosen to detour around towards Slapton, just south of Torquay, as my family history research had shown that one of my great grandfathers had been born in the area. We were most fortunate to talk to Paul the Postman at Slapton who was able to re-direct us towards Chivelstone Church. On our way there we spotted the sign for Ford - Simon Jacob Blank's birthplace (1849) and were able to talk to Gilly who gave us more information regarding the local area - thank you... We then found Chivelstone easily and were amazed when walking aound the church yard as we found the headstone for my great great grandparents - Simon Jacob's parents - John and Mary. That was a real bonus for me!
As it was after 11.00am we started looking for somewhere for lunch and stopped when we saw the California Country Inn - a fabulous meal served by Emma who told us that she was from Chivelstone - co-incidences are everywhere, aren't they?
Having relaxed we set of for Land's End via Looe and some more beautiful scenery.
At Lands End Peter the photographer was able to take our official pictures and we settled down for a drink (coffee for me) and enjoy the location - we are so glad we undertook this venture - I don't know if we would have got around to visiting so many places around the UK otherwise.....
Just before we left Lands End we started talking to Sam who was awaiting the imminent arrival of her husband, Mark who had cycled 346 miles from Chalfont St Giles in Buckinhamshire over the last few days!! Unfortunately he would be arriving after the official sign had been taken down from its post for the night and would not be able to have an 'official' photo taken to mark the end of his journey.
Tomorrow we are off to Barnstable to visit my good friend, Jeannette. We were in teacher training college together and have always kept in touch.
I may not be able to access the internet tomorrow and so will catch up with my blog when I next have the opportunity...
